If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult a midwife or healthcare professional before use

We recommend approximately 10-15 mg of heme iron per day as an initial starting dosage based on individual needs. For many, a lower dosage may also be sufficient.

Why is heme iron so "low-dose"?

Research shows that heme iron is unique in several ways, including that it has a much higher bioavailability than other types of iron (non-heme iron) that are generally used in traditional iron supplements.
In addition, heme iron is absorbed via a unique absorption mechanism in the body that distinguishes it from all other types of iron.

It is therefore not possible to compare the dose of heme iron with traditional, chemically produced forms of non-heme iron, such as ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate, ferrous bisglycinate, ferrous pyrophosphate, ferrous fumarate or similar iron compounds.

Research shows that the body has a harder time absorbing non-heme iron, which is often compensated for by much higher dosages. Ultimately, generally only a small percentage of iron is actually absorbed into the body regardless of whether you use a low or high dose of iron - but the higher the bioavailability, the more is absorbed per milligram of iron consumed.

Iron supplements can be taken if necessary during, for example, pregnancy, breastfeeding, heavy menstruation, intense exercise or after donating blood. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should first consult a midwife or doctor.
